Running a pub is not just a job; it’s a way of life. You have to be 100% dedicated but you get out what you put in. I’ve been involved in the pub trade for 29 years and have picked up a good following. People come because they like the food, the beer, the real ale and the atmosphere. My drive is running the pub to the best I can and that’s where the rewards come from.
I create a reason for people to come to my pub, not to go anywhere else and to keep coming back. We run quiz nights, theme nights and anything else we can. The trade is out there, you just have to make it come to you. We trade on quality, from the beer to the food, knowing that people expect a good experience.
I advertise all the Brains Beers and take up all the promotions from the brewery — we are very much a team. My Business Development Manager is exceptional and has really helped me. I’ve been working with Brains for a long time and still really feel part of the Brains family.

We got on well with Brains from the outset and we liked the idea of working with a business that is still family owned and reflects that in its dealings.
We wanted the freedom to develop our own ideas, as we are pretty proactive and self sufficient in terms of our business. We felt very comfortable that we would be able to do this with a Brains pub, with the knowledge that we would be supported when and if we needed it and be treated as individuals.
We were thrilled to have been informed in 2010 that we had been selected as ‘Brains Lease & Tenanted Pub of the Year’. It’s great that all of the hard work we have put into making the pub a success over the last couple of years has been appreciated and acknowledged by the Company. To receive this accolade is a great reward in itself, especially in view of the competition we faced. It is a good feeling to be able to say that we are ‘Pub of the Year’ and only adds to our motivation to continue developing our business in the future.

Since making the initial enquiry about taking on a Brains tenanted pub we felt that we had a tremendous support network behind us. From the very first meeting with Caren Laing (our Business Development Manager) everything felt right, the whole process went very smoothly with extremely open and helpful support all the way through. We have now been in position for 6 weeks and are thoroughly enjoying our new venture, everyone at Brains has been extremely professional but also very helpful and friendly, it feels like we are now part of the Brains family and long may it continue.

We have been tenants with Brains for 12 years at the Romilly and we have found Brains to be a great company to work with. We recently decided to take a 2nd pub, the Ivor Arms as a result.
These are tough times for pubs but support is given in many ways, with Inn-Profit magazine showing drink deals and news. The technical services side is 2nd to none, help is also offered with various activities e.g. beer festivals, film nights, bar games leagues and competitions.
Running a tenancy is a two way relationship and it gives me confidence knowing we not only have a helpful and professional BDM behind us but also a great company is Brains.

I could not have seen myself taking a tenancy with the recent poor publicity, however having been eager to take on my own business after years in the managed sector, after discussions with various pub companies it was apparent to me that Brains would be my only choice!
Their central support and efficiency is second to none, and they are as passionate about making my business work as I am.
They have been instrumental in assisting me create the pub I wanted to create, and without their support my vision for my business would have been much more difficult to achieve.
I would have difficulty in finding any fault with the way Brains operate their tenanted estate.
