Brains will stop automatically giving out plastic straws with soft drinks in all our pubs, following a successful trial earlier this year.
In July we joined the Straws Suck initiative, a global movement in the hospitality industry to reduce plastic straw usage. Plastic constitutes approximately 90 per cent of all waste floating on the sea’s surface. Plastic straws add significantly to this problem and are entirely avoidable.
Many pubs are doing their part by joining the movement to ‘Go Green’ and are only giving out straws when they are requested; no longer giving them out automatically.
We piloted the scheme in eight pubs across South Wales this summer, the Yard Bar and Kitchen, Ty Mawr, Red Dragon, Fox and Hounds, Ty Risha, Pear Tree, Malsters Llandaff and Penwig.
Feedback from the Straws Suck initiative has been overwhelmingly positive and as a result the scheme has now been extended to all 103 managed pubs in the Brains estate.
A spokesman for Brains said: "When we announced the trial of the Straws Suck initiative the feedback on social media from customers was overwhelmingly supportive of the scheme.
"Having a plastic straw in a soft drink has become a habit for many but we hope to help break that bad habit by not giving out straws automatically to customers with their drinks.
"We understand there will be some adults and children who need to use straws so a small number will be kept behind the bar in our pubs but we are confident the Straws Suck initiative will dramatically cut the amount of plastic waste our pubs are throwing away."
