Our history

Two centuries ago only one house stood in Llangefni except for a public house called Pen-y-Bont, until it burnt down. John Ogilby mapped the hostelry as early as 1675 as a popular place to stay.

In 1817 Sir Richard Bulkley built the present hotel and changed the name to The Bull’s Head Hotel, due to the family coat of arms, which had three bulls’ heads on it. The family were the main land owners at the time and the hotel was used as a place for local farmers to go and pay rent. In 1850 the description of the building was; "The Bull’s Head Inn here is a very respectable and comfortable establishment. At this house business connected to the Inland Revenue is transacted"

This is likely to be where George Borrow stayed when he came to look at the town and William Williams Pant-y-Celyn also stayed here. It was said that Mozart came to the UK with his father when he was eight years old, and that they met William Williams here at The Bull!

The courtyard rooms at the rear of the hotel were former servant lodgings and tackle rooms which were accessed from Glanhwfa Road. There is also a building called the coach house (which is now the conference room) again reflecting the era of the hostelry being used by travelling coaches. The coach access is still visible from the rear of the courtyard. The road known as Lon Bost used to run through Llangefni prior to the new road being built by Thomas Telford.

The Bulkley family sold the hotel in 1915 to the Ind. Coop. Brewery. It was then sold to the Alliea Domecq Pub Company and then to the Second Pub Estate. It was then bought by Welsh Historic Inns in 1997 and is presently owned by SA Brain of Cardiff who purchased the hotel in October 2008.
